Full day at Angkor

38 °C

So after another day exploring Angkor we still had one day left on our ticket. We decided that instead of hiring a tuk-tuk for a day we would instead take advantage of our hotel and rent an air-conditioned van for the day and travel around in that. It was only a few dollars more to take the van which turned out to be a great choice. We made use of by exploring the surrounding area of Angkor Wat as well. So early that morning we got up for a big breakfast and then got in the van around 7am and left for Angkor. Our first visit that day was to the Ta Prohm temple which is famous for the giant trees that have overgrown many of the temple walls and buildings. Its a spectacular sight to see, some of the trees are very old and very tall.

The buildings inside Ta Prohm were in surprisingly good shape although some sections had collapsed due to the massive growth of some of the root system of the trees. Though it was much smaller than some of the other temples, it is still one of our favorites.

As you can tell by the amount of the pictures, we absolutely loved it there. It was a very surreal felling when you stood inside the temple and thought about the construction of it and how the jungle had taken over it.

After Ta Prohm we headed out in the van to our next destination.

Upgraded Hotel Room

sunny 38 °C

We had only booked a couple nights at the Smiling Hotel not knowing how many days we wanted to stay. Because we had purchased the three day pass to Angkor we needed to book more nights. When we booked more nights they asked us if we wanted to be upgraded to a suite. We asked to see the room before committing but once we saw it we couldn't say no. I'll let the pictures explain :) best thing it was still the same CHEAP price as our first room.

Baphuon and Sunset at Pre Rup

semi-overcast 37 °C

After taking it easy the day before we decided to go back out to Angkor and see Baphuon and finish off watching the sunset at Pre Rup. Instead of going during the hottest time of the day like we did the first day, we went in the afternoon which was a great idea! Much more bearable.

Every Wat seemed to have something different than others. Baphuon had a long walkway that led up to the main building that was held up by pillars. They were all still in great condition and very neat to see when looking under the long walkway that led up to the building.

Another different thing that Baphuon has is that it was two large pools. One for the women and one for the men. The women had the largest and the men had the smallest. Finally, the women got the better of the two for once!!! :)

Unfortunately it was cloudy and we didn't get to see a nice sunset, but it was really neat being on the top of Pre Rup drinking a beer looking out over Angkor.

South Gate of Angkor Thom and Bayon,

Once we were through the gate we came to Bayon. It is similar to the south gate of Angkor Thom with lots of head everyone. Bayon wasn't in the best condition as other temples in Angkor but the size and the carvings we still very impressive.

Angkor Wat

sunny 38 °C

The next day after arriving in Siem Reap we got up nice and early for Breakfast, an amazing buffet breakfast was included with the room price so we had a big breakfast to set us up for the day at Angkor. After breakfast we hired a Tuk Tuk driver for the day and he (Mr. Lek as he liked to be called) took us to Angkor and some of the surrounding temples. We stared off at the main temple, Angkor Wat.

When driving up towards the temple you are almost in a bit of shock to see the scale of the temple. It is surrounded by at moat that is about 80 wide and a wall about 5 meters high. The temple itself it located within the walls, and surrounded by what was once a small city but now there is not much to show that there once was a city within the walls. As mentioned, the scale of this temple is huge and words can't describe how big it is. I will let the pictures do the talking for me.

When walking through Angkor its hard to imagine all the work that went into building the place. It must have taken thousands of workers so many years to build it. And the details that went into every piece of stone were just as amazing and awe inspiring. Although a lot of the details have eroded away over the years, there are still some pieces of stone that have the carvings that are still visible.

These pictures are just from the first of three days at Angkor. We are currently on Koh Samet right now enjoying the last few days of our trip. We will post photos and another blog about the rest of our time in Cambodia and Angkor when we arrive back in bangkok on the 17th. Right now we are going to go out and enjoy some sunshine and some beaches!!
